It's Ok to not be Ok

"Hey how're things?"

The question that seems to mortify so many people. More often that not, the person asking the question secretly hoping for a basic answer. The person being asked saying "Ok thanks", for fear of being a burden, bringing others down, of being judged, of being weak, or one of so many similar thoughts.

But what if you're not ok? Ah, well, it seems we have a problem here don't we? I'm afraid that's just not the "Done thing".

You see, society dictates that the world does not simply stop when you have a problem, or when the world is getting the better of you. The machine must keep running, the wheels must keep turning, and you must play your part, or get left behind. Such is the nature of capitalism.

At least this is how the world feels the majority of the time when things aren't going your way.

That last sentence would be the one I ask people to focus on - "This is how it feels". I know it sounds over-simplified, it sounds cliche', but sadly it is all too true.

We all go through hard times, and it's during these hard times that we really need support. It could be stress, anxiety, depression, a life-changing event, or just a bad day at the office. Whatever the case, sometimes it's a bit too much, and we shouldn't have to "Go it alone".

If this post sounds like a bit of a "preach" to people, then I guess that's because it is. In the last year, my wife Beth went through a life-changing event. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer and had to go through a hysterectomy, fortunately it was all successful and we're coping ok for the most part. We're lucky to have great family and friends to talk to when we need, as well as each other. Nonetheless, there are days where times are hard, and where things could be made easier. It's on those days that I realise just how hard some people might actually find things.

So I guess my point is simple. It's ok to struggle and have a bad day, week, month, year. You don't even have to have a logical reason, you can just struggle. Don't feel bad for it though, odds are there are more people having a "bad day" than those doing well. It's ok to talk about it, don't suffer in silence.

For the people in a good place - please keep your eyes and ears open. Odds are that there's someone whose day you could make or break.  Be mindful, and  if you think someone is struggling, listen, and be supportive. You don't have to have answers, sometimes a chat is enough.

Yes, life goes on, but we shouldn't put such a stigma on things.

Just raising awareness 😃
